The aim of this report is to explore the principles of Universal Design and the Web ContentAccessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for websites. Universal Design promotes accessibility for allindividuals, regardless of their abilities, age, or background, making it especially crucial forweb design. In Norway and the EU, online accessibility guidelines are largely based onWCAG, which outlines standards for creating accessible and user-friendly websites forindividuals with various disabilities.
Insight
We asked Norwegian Coutures 10 best costumers, what was the most important for them when they would invest in a new suit or blazer.
Also, we asked them how a standard size suit would fit them, and if any, where the problems was located. We figured out that the most common problem was too long or too short on arms, and also the total jacket length.
This is the same insight that the founder was telling us, after 10 years in the business.
2. Methods Used in the Analysis
The analysis employs a combination of automated testing and manual review to evaluatewebsite compliance with WCAG standards:
Automated Testing Tools:
- Site Improvement Analysis: Prioritization of issues (High, Medium, Low).
- Lighthouse Accessibility Audit: To assess overall accessibility.
- Color Contrast Analyzer: To ensure text-to-background contrast meets minimumstandards.
Manual Testing:
- Google Chrome Inspector Tools: For in-depth analysis.
- Alternative Text Review: Ensuring descriptive link text and image alt texts.
- Consistent Design Evaluation: Assessing visual and functional consistency.
- Keyboard Navigation: Ensuring full site navigation using only a keyboard.
- Screen Reader Compatibility: Verifying functionality with tools like VoiceOver.
- Responsive Design Checks: Confirming mobile and tablet accessibility.
- Cookies and Consent Evaluation: Ensuring compliance with GDPR and WCAG.
- Visual Presentation: Creating an infographic to highlight issues.
3. General Theory of Universal Design
Universal Design focuses on creating accessible products and services for everyone. Keyprinciples include:
- Equal Opportunity: Ensuring all users can access the content.
- Flexibility in Use: Providing various methods of interaction.
- Simple and Intuitive Use: Ensuring ease of understanding.
- Tolerance for Error: Allowing room for user mistakes.
- Low Physical Effort: Minimizing strain during interaction.
- Appropriate Size and Space: Ensuring accessibility for all body sizes and abilities.
4. WCAG Requirements and Adjustments
The WCAG outlines specific criteria to enhance accessibility:
- Perceptual Accessibility: (1.1.1) Alternative text for images, (1.4.3) Contrast ratiorequirements.
- Operational Accessibility: (2.1.1) Keyboard accessibility, (2.4.1) Proper headingstructure.
- Understandable Content: (3.1.1) Readability and (3.3.1) Clear error messaging.
- Robust Content: (4.1.1) Compatibility with assistive technologies.
Specific adjustments include implementing alternative text for images, ensuring sufficientcontrast ratios, maintaining keyboard navigability, and using proper heading hierarchies.
5. Disabilities and Accommodations
The framework considers various disabilities and necessary accommodations:
- Visual Impairments: Ensuring high contrast and adjustable text sizes.
- Motor Impairments: Prioritizing keyboard navigation and accessible forms.
- Blindness/Screen Reader Users: Structuring content for screen readercompatibility.
- Epilepsy/Sensitivity: Minimizing flashing content to prevent seizures.
- Temporary Disabilities: Addressing needs of users with short-term impairments.
6. Practical Examples and Demonstrations
The documentation includes practical examples and demonstrations, showcasing howspecific adjustments enhance website accessibility. This is illustrated through screenshotsand explanations that highlight the functionality of the implemented changes.
7. User Experience (UX)
The report concludes with a focus on user experience in relation to WCAG compliance:
- User-Centric Design: Centering design around user needs.
- Usability: Ensuring intuitive interaction without extensive training.
- Consistency: Maintaining uniform elements throughout the site.
- Feedback Mechanisms: Providing clear feedback on user actions.
8. Summary and Further Resources
In summary, this framework emphasizes the importance of Universal Design and compliancewith WCAG to create inclusive and user-friendly websites. It also provides links andresources for further learning and implementation of accessibility best practices.
